Green living, or eco-friendly living, is a trend toward using sustainable resources and minimizing the negative impact that daily life has on the environment. Green living has been given more and more attention in recent years and the green initiative seems to be catching in on big cities and communities across the US. The concept to green living isn't difficult and it can make a world of difference to our natural resources and the enviroments in which we surround ourselves. The basics of green living can be taught in the classroom and practiced in school, at home and in all aspects of life-and death.

Education about green living can be taught through actions in the classroom and curriculum that can be applied at home and in everyday life. Practicing classroom habits such as turning off the water during hand washing, turning off the lights when leaving the room, and using the back side of worksheets for scrap paper, are steps toward being green in school. Curriculum to support these in-school habits can revolve around such topics as water conservation, water reclamation, saving energy and the advantages of solar power, using sustainable drawing and writing materials, and the protection of trees.

Recycling is a common and familiar aspect of green living. However, recycling and reusing waste is only a small part of the green living spectrum. More advanced topics about eco-friendly living include studying the materials homes are built from, organic clothing, organically grown foods and sustainable packaging, advancements in automobiles, airport travel and the process of green burial practices for putting people to rest at the end of life.

Valuable resources for learning about green living can be found locally at landfills, recycling centers, utility companies and power plants.
