It is quite interesting to know that there are many hazardous materials that are used in our daily lives. They are actually blended with other materials and elements and become fit for human usage. If seen individually, there are many products that contain hazardous materials. The problem arises when these dangerous goods are transported from one place to the other. There are high probabilities that the hazardous materials start reacting with other elements while transport and becoming dangerous causing harm to life and property as well as the nature.

Nowadays dangerous goods are transported via roadways, waterways as well as airways. All these routes are guided by international organizations, which have laid out strict rules and regulations regarding transportation of hazardous materials. For roadways, there is DOT (Department of Transportation), for airways there is IATA (International Air Transport Association) and for waterways there is IMO (International Maritime Organization).

It is quite risky to transport hazardous materials via airways and that is the reason that IATA has implemented such tough guidelines for the same. There are innumerable processes that are followed before such hazardous materials are transported from one destination to the other. Initially all the materials are thoroughly checked and surveyed by field security officers so that there is no damage in the materials. Next, they are packed in special containers as per the instructions from IATA. All this is done under the supervision of the field security officers and hazardous materials consultants. The special containers are a safety measure by the IATA to ensure that even if any reactions take place in the hazardous materials, they do not come out easily and cause lesser damage to humans and nature. Infact, nowadays as per rules and regulations of IATA, special teams of trained hazmat professionals are sent along with the aircraft, which carries dangerous goods. This is done so that the experts can combat any kind of disaster, if unfortunately something happens.

Handling hazardous materials is quite a daunting task. One needs to undergo rigorous training to be able to be a master in the trade. And until and unless one is a master, one is not allowed to go on duties. Various kinds of IATA trainings are provided by the international organization to safeguard human lives, property and the environment. Similarly, there are hazardous materials training courses that are organized by the IMO and DOT too. The processes of handling the dangerous goods are different in waterways, airways and roadways; but the basics of the course remain the same almost. For instance, a hazardous materials handling training course organized by IMO will definitely have swimming courses in its curriculum. The training programs of handling the hazardous materials are truly rigorous and involve lot of strength and will power. This is the reason that very few people are able to reach to the end of the course. As per the rules of IATA, the security professionals traveling in the flights carrying hazardous materials should have special hazmat dressings. This helps the individuals to work better in crisis situations.
